Cambridge Summer School 2010
1 July 2010
At the beginning of the summer holidays, St Dominic's participated in the Northern Ireland Summer School: "Experiencing Cambridge", which was hosted by Corpus Christi College. Two of our Year 13 students were invited to take part in seminars delivered by the Director of Studies in History and Law at Corpus Christi. Our students rose to the challenge when having to present their research to seventeen other represented schools from the North as well as a body of current students and lecturers from Cambridge.
"I was studying the subject of Law during my time at Cambridge. We began by looking at the kind of topics that would be studies during the first year of Law. We researched Constitutional Law in detail and we were able to practice how to look up specific cases in text books. Each subject group had to give a presentation and we decided to present a mock trial with one team defending and one team prosecuting. I found this part particularly enjoyable. I really enjoyed my stay at Cambridge and was made to feel very welcome by the staff and undergraduates. This trip has made me think a lot about the choices I have to make next year and has given me a real insight into life at Cambridge University." Leona Kennedy
"When I arrived in Cambridge, I really did not know what to expect. Thankfully, I got on really well with all of the other students and the undergraduates were really friendly. I decided to study History during my short stay, which was completely different from my knowledge of History studied at school. I was given the task of looking at the origin of democracy from Ancient Greece to modern day Europe. I presented my essay along with my group, and although I found the task challenging, I also found it extremely enjoyable. I would encourage other students to experience Cambridge as it has taught me how independent studies can greatly benefit me, what ever University I choose to go to." Rebecca Mason
