Chemistry Department Success: Irish Senior Chemistry Olympiad

1 February 2010

St. Dominic’s Year 14 Chemistry students J Murray, C McGettigan and R Rooney took part in the heat of The Irish Senior Chemistry Olympiad held in the Whitla Hall at QUB on Saturday 30th January.  Approximately one hundred students from all over N.I. sat the three hours of examinations.

The ten highest scoring students were presented with Gold, Silver or Bronze awards and will undertake a three day intensive course of tests and practicals over the Easter break at DCU. Two of the ten successful candidates will be offered places on the Irish team to compete in the International Chemistry Olympiad in Japan in July 2010.

J Murray from St. Dominic’s was presented with a Silver Award and said of her achievement, “I’m delighted to have done so well. I have always enjoyed Chemistry and this was a fantastic opportunity for me. I’m looking forward to travelling to Dublin for the next stage of the competition and would relish the opportunity to travel to Japan.”
