Advice for Parents

You have a very important role, especially in reassuring your daughter and helping her prepare for moving from primary to secondary school. This is an exciting and significant event in the life of your daughter. It is an important milestone which, for many parents and teachers, marks a change in expectations regarding crucial life-skills such as independent working and self-organisation.

There are many worries that your daughter might express; Not making friends, getting lost, homework, not being able to do the work, getting to school and back (especially if it involves a bus journey), not having the right books and equipment etc.

Although common, most children report that they are no longer worried about these after just one or two weeks at school!

If your daughter has these worries it is useful to reassure them of this, and to emphasise that everyone else will also be feeling anxious. As there will be many more pupils in Year 8 than Primary 7, everyone has a good choice of friends, and even children who move up with several children from their primary school tend to make new friends at St. Dominic’s.

The remaining worries are nearly all to do with the new organisational demands that they know will be placed upon them. Luckily these are areas where we can help the most. We will be inviting you to attend an Induction Evening for Parents early in the first term to support you and your daughter in her first year in St. Dominic’s, in the meantime you can;

1. Take a positive interest in your daughter’s work by checking her Homework Planner every night, looking at her work, praising and encouraging her at every opportunity.
2. Provide a quiet place for your daughter to do her homework.
3. Communicate with a Subject teacher, Class Tutor of Year Head if you have any concerns or if your daughter is unable to complete a homework for any reason.
4. Sign the Homework Planner weekly.

We hope that your daughter will be very happy here and we look forward to a continued partnership.

Parents Handbook

The purpose of the handbook is to give parents clear information about the day to day organisation and procedures in St. Dominic’s High School.

Please contact the school if there is an area about which you are unclear or which you think should be included.
