Principals Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to St. Dominic’s Grammar School for Girls.

St. Dominic’s, founded by the Dominican Order in 1870 continues to flourish as a centre of educational excellence in Belfast. The school has a long and proud tradition of providing a first class holistic education for girls. As principal and a former pupil of the school, I am pleased that this ethos of excellence has been maintained and that the school’s traditions and in particular, its warmth, sense of community and of purpose are still prevalent.

As a school in the 21st century, we are dedicated to our Dominican ethos and at the same time to moving forward to embrace the challenges of change. We are committed to ensuring that our pupils receive an education which meets their talents, abilities, needs and aspirations and prepares them fully to take their place in an ever-changing C21st world.

St. Dominic’s has been at the forefront of education since 1870 and the education provided by the school has opened the doors of opportunity to thousands of young women who have gone on to play leading roles in society. Our Dominican ethos, practices and continued high standards promote in our pupils a pursuit of excellence, enthusiasm, confidence and personal integrity and in this way, St. Dominic’s continues to develop highly successful young women. It is not by accident that one of our former pupils is President of Ireland and one of our current pupils recently visited Washington having won a place on the prestigious Future World Leaders’.

Academic excellence continues to be a high priority for the school community and this academic tradition is enhanced by the school’s dedication to meeting a much wider criteria for measuring our success as a school. We aim to provide pupils with a wide range of learning experiences both in the classroom and through a multiplicity of extra-curricular opportunities and educational visits. The enthusiasm and dedication of our staff ensure that the pupils get the opportunities to be involved in sport, music, drama, entrepreneurship, community and leadership projects. Our core aim is to empower each individual pupil to be fully alive to, and to realise, her full potential.

As a Catholic Grammar School, we value and respect the dignity and contribution of every member of the school community and are committed to living out the gospel values in all aspects of our provision.

Hopefully, this prospectus will give a glimpse of the exciting and vibrant life that characterises St. Dominic’s.
