We aim to encourage an enjoyment of History alongside high academic achievement. This is shown by the large numbers choosing to follow the subject at GCSE and A Level. We have approximately 100 GCSE students and 40 A Level places taken up each year.
The department is dynamic and innovative, using a variety of learning and teaching strategies to build up historical skills and understanding. Above all, we place an emphasis on pupil participation in their own learning, building self confidence in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
Courses taught in the department:
Y8 – Introduction to History, The Normans in Ireland, Building Castles
Y9 – Change: - Fashion, The Renaissance, voyages of discovery, The Reformation, the Plantations, Revolutions in America and France
Y10 – Difference and Division: - The experience of WW1, the Partition of Ireland, The Holocaust, civil Rights in America, Civil rights in Northern Ireland, The Suffragettes and Women’s Rights
Achievements of Dept.
Top placings –
The department regularly achieves highly both at GCSE and A-Level. In 2008 98 % of girls achieved A* - C grades at GCSE, with 84% achieving A-C at A-Level.
Extra-curricular activities of the department:
2009 will see the development of the History Club which will take part in projects, show films, take excursions and have guest speakers.
In recent years the department has facilitated trips to Dublin and Krakow.
