Physics

Members of the Department

Dr. Bronagh McIvor
Mrs. Patricia McLister

All students study physics at KS3 as part of the Junior Science Course. At KS4, girls may choose to study GCSE physics or Double Award Science and either can be used as a basis for A level study. At KS5 we do AS and A level physics, at present using CCEA for all examinations.

We promote science within the school and encourage girls to attend lectures, courses and Open Days. Occasionally we have speakers from outside school and a particularly successful talk was given by one of the space shuttle astronauts.

Many girls have gone into careers in physics and engineering and a number have won lucrative sponsorships and scholarships.

GCSE Double Award Science:

  • Forces and Energy
  • Waves
  • Electricity
  • Electromagnetism
  • Earth and Space
Physics at GCSE has the above named topics and Nuclear Physics

AS physics
  • Forces
  • Energy and
  • Electricity
  • Waves
  • Photons
  • Medical Physics
A2
  • Thermal Physics
  • Momentum
  • Oscillations
  • Atomic and Nuclear Physics
Both courses have a practical techniques assessment.
