A team from L'Arche spoke to Year 13 students of their aim to overcome the labelling and stereotyping of individuals, challenging tags such as 'disabled'. They spoke of the importance of valuing the individual and their unique potential. The L'Arche community focuses on the concept of friendship and is appropriately named the Ark (offering a safe haven for all). There are 140 L'Arche communities worldwide, they held their international conference in Belfast over the summer (many of our juniors helped pack conference bags for this meeting).
The community have both residential bases and run a number of outreach programmes and work projects e.g. 'Grow Cook, Cater'. The students found the film of Larry incredibly moving, breaking into spontaneous applause at the end. It was important that all have a chance to have their voice heard.
