Post :                         Classroom Assistant (Special Needs)

Temporary One year post 10 hours per week

Salary:                       Classroom Assistant      Pts14- 17                                

Responsible to:      Bursar through Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities outlined below are intended as a guide to the main elements of the post.  They may be amended by the line manager in consultation with the post holder

  1. Assisting in Classroom e.g.


  • Providing pupil learning support as directed by the teacher.

  • Responding appropriately to individual learning, social and behavioural needs.

  • Assisting in the implementation and monitoring of behaviour programmes.

  • Preparation for class and setting up apparatus.

  • Assisting pupils as directed by the teaching staff.

  • Ensuring equipment and books are serviceable.

  • Making pupils aware of health and safety routines.

  1. Other duties as assigned e.g.


  • Supervision of pupils at break and lunch times.

  • Supervision of recreational apparatus.

  • Assisting with recreational activities at the social development of the pupils.

  • Assisting with toileting/ personal hygiene/ dressing.

  • Deal with minor first aid.

  • Report and record all accidents.

  • Literacy/numeracy support work

  • General school administration work as required


    It is recognised that by the nature of the work of the classroom assistant a degree of flexibility is required and accordingly staff may be requested to carry out certain miscellaneous duties in addition to those set out above.
