Aims

Students will:

  • develop an understanding of written and spoken French in a variety of contexts

  • develop the ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken French, using a variety of vocabulary, syntax and structures

  • develop knowledge of the language and language-learning skills

  • develop an awareness and understanding of French-speaking countries and communities

  • recognise that their linguistic knowledge, understanding and skills help them to take their place in a multilingual global society

  • derive enjoyment from language learning


 

Key Stage 4 (GCSE)


We currently offer French at GCSE, AS and A2 and follow the CEA specification at all levels Many of the staff in the French Department are double linguists, teaching both French and Spanish, one also teaching Italian. All are keen linguists and keep abreast of new developments and initiatives, attending any relevant courses which become available and disseminating good practice within the Department. We make every effort to embrace technology in order to enhance pupil enjoyment of and proficiency in the language. We have a French Language assistant who works primarily with our A-Level students to enhance their skills and provide insight into French culture and civilisation.


 

Key Stage 5 (GCE)

A-level students are encouraged to deepen their awareness of French culture through the media and cinema trips etc are organised where possible. This year two of our AS students were part of a team which recently finished second in the European Youth Parliament The study of A-Level French at this level encourages students to:

  • develop an enthusiasm for and an understanding of the French language and culture in a variety of contexts and genres

  • communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the French language for a range of purposes

  • develop knowledge and understanding of societal, political and cultural issues in French-speaking countries or communities

  • draw together different areas of linguistic competence, skills and understanding

  • develop higher order thinking skills, for example independent learning and analytical and evaluative thinking

  • carry out research and present their findings through multimedia presentations

  • develop advanced study skills that help them prepare for third level education

  • provide extended responses and evidence of quality of written communication

  • engage critically with intellectually stimulating films, texts and other materials

  • demonstrate that they understand and can use French at a high level to discuss and reflect on aspects of society, politics and culture

There are six assessment units in this specification, three at AS level and three at A2.
