Aims

Studying Technology and Design provides opportunities to tackle and resolve design and technological problems to meet human needs within a range of contexts, such as home, school, leisure, community, business and industry. You will

  • create your own product or system

  • work with tools and machines

  • use graphics, and other methods, to communicate your design ideas

  • make links between products and the impact they have on daily life

  • develop your decision-making skills

  • gain insight into related sectors such as manufacturing/engineering and the career paths they have to offer

Key Stage 4


Technology and Design is an interesting and varied subject, which includes creative, practical and academic elements.

  • Unit 1: Technology and Design Core Content (Year 11)

  • Non-Assessed Design Task (Year 11)

  • Non-Assessed Manufacturing Task (Year 11)

  • Unit 2: Optional Areas of Study - Product Design Option (Year 12)

  • Unit 3: Design and Manufacturing Project. (Year 12)


 

Key Stage 5 (GCE)


From September 2016 the new CEA Specification is as follows:

AS Level (40% of A-Level)

AS1: Exam Paper 1- Core Area of Study

Exam Paper 2 – Product Design Option

AS2: Design and Manufacturing project with portfolio

A2 Level (60% of A-Level)

A2 1: Exam Paper – Product Design

A2 2: Design and Manufacturing project with portfolio


 

Career Opportunities


The increase of Technology in society ensures that this subject will open up a wide range of career options, both academic and vocational, particularly in the field of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Sports Technology, Clean Technologies, Education, Construction and Management and Product Design to name but a few.
