Eco Club invited to help out at Ulster Wildlife Winter Solstice Event

One Wednesday 2nd October Dawn, Amber and Alesha from Ulster Wildlife visited the Eco Club meeting to enlist the help of the group in delivering their Winter Solstice event on 20th Dec. Winter solstice marks the time in the year when daylight hours are at their shortest, thereafter daylight hours increase (in the northern hemisphere). In the past the lengthening of daylight hours was to be celebrated, as light and fire were seen as symbols of life and growth in many cultures. The Eco Club have been asked to come up with ideas to bring the event to life and help to connect people with nature. Ulster Wildlife chose a festival which departs from typical commercialism associated with big events and one which can connect the whole community in a unique way, as many cultures have a special relationship with these natural seasonal changes going back centuries. There is a rich folklore, mythology and stories surrounding these seasonal changes which the event hopes to explore.
